EU Freezes Assets of IRGC Naval Spokesman Over Hormuz Strait Blockade

(MENAFN) The European Union delivered a pointed diplomatic blow Monday, slapping targeted sanctions on a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps naval spokesperson, a key regional military command, and an oil trade official — holding them directly accountable for Tehran's stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Council approved today restrictive measures against two individuals and one entity under the extended legal framework targeting those involved in Iran's actions and policies threatening the freedom of navigation in the Middle East," said a Council of the EU statement.

The EU named Mohammad Akbarzadeh, spokesperson for the IRGC's naval wing, and the corps' Hormozgan Provincial Command as primary targets of the measures. Also swept into the sanctions net was Hamid Hosseini, a representative of Iran's Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters' Union — a listing that signals Brussels' intent to extend pressure beyond the military sphere and into Tehran's vital energy trade networks.

The financial consequences are immediate and far-reaching. "Those listed under the sanctions regime are subject to an asset freeze, and it is prohibited to provide them with funds or economic resources, either directly or indirectly," the Council statement further said.

All named individuals are simultaneously barred from setting foot on EU soil, with the bloc confirming that a travel ban "applies to all natural persons listed."
