Bulgarian PM Warns Europe Is Raising Nuclear Risk in Ukraine War
Speaking at the EU-Western Balkans summit in Tivat, Montenegro, Radev delivered an unusually blunt assessment of the continent's strategic posture.
"Do you know what our problem is? So far, Europe has been trying to achieve a conventional victory against the world's largest nuclear power," he said.
The Bulgarian leader argued that Europe is ill-equipped to counter Russia's hypersonic weapons capabilities, warning that persisting along the current path only compounds the security threat facing the continent.
"This increases the risk enormously. We are increasing the nuclear risk," he said.
Radev called on all nations to actively contribute to peace efforts and back initiatives aimed at ending the conflict, stressing that any avenue toward a negotiated settlement deserves support — regardless of its origin. His remarks framed the pursuit of peace as a strategic imperative rather than a concession.
The comments reflect growing unease among some European Union member states over the trajectory of the conflict and the absence of a credible diplomatic off-ramp as the war grinds into its fourth year.
