EU Council Chief Addresses Western Balkans Enlargement

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized Thursday that expanding the European Union to include the Western Balkans represents the bloc’s most crucial geopolitical investment. He made the remarks in Belgrade, the capital of candidate country Serbia, during a joint press briefing with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

“For us, the enlargement, namely to the Western Balkans, is the most important geopolitical investment that the European Union is doing,” Costa declared. He outlined the requirements for Serbia’s accession path, stressing that the EU was “not blackmailing” Serbia or “putting obstacles” in its way, but instead cooperating closely with Serbian authorities throughout the process.

Costa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Serbia’s European perspective, noting: “I’m here as I was last year to reaffirm the European Union’s continued commitment to Serbia’s European perspective. In this time of global geopolitical uncertainty and economic instability, now more than ever, enlargement is not just an opportunity, it is a geostrategic necessity for Europe.”

He highlighted that enlargement is an investment in peace, stability, security, and prosperity across the continent, underscoring that the process is built on trust. Costa also expressed support for Serbia’s efforts, pointing out that the EU remains the country’s “most significant partner in trade investment.”
