EU Backs Ongoing US-Iran Talks, Hails Pakistan’s Mediation Efforts

(MENAFN) European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday emphasized the importance of maintaining negotiations between the United States and Iran, while highlighting Pakistan’s contribution to efforts aimed at fostering communication between the two countries.

Speaking at the opening of the 8th EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue in Islamabad alongside Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Kallas stressed that the conflict carries consequences far beyond the region.

"It is a conflict that is having an impact on everybody in the world when it comes to energy prices, (and) prices of fertilizers. So, this is really what we need to see ceasefire holding, (and) talks continuing," she said.

Kallas also praised Pakistan for its role in helping create conditions for direct engagement between Washington and Tehran as both sides pursue a negotiated resolution to the conflict.

According to reports, Pakistan has been serving as a mediator between the United States and Iran in efforts to bring an end to the war that began on Feb. 28. A ceasefire was reached on April 8 following diplomatic efforts led by Islamabad.

Addressing broader international challenges, Kallas said, “We have this contested geopolitical environment… tensions everywhere, we have real risk of escalation… and we also share the priorities when it comes to rules-based international order that we need to develop further."

The visit represents her first official trip to Pakistan since taking office as the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and vice president of the European Commission.

Highlighting shared interests between the two sides, she added, "We are working towards global and regional stability which is in our interest."
