EU Parliament Extends Invitation to Pope Leo to Speak at Plenary Session

(MENAFN) The European Parliament has extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to speak at an upcoming plenary session, according to the institution’s president on Wednesday.

Roberta Metsola said in a post on the US social media platform X that the invitation reflects the pope’s global influence and moral standing.

“Pope Leo XIV is not only the shepherd of the Roman Catholic flock across the globe, but a symbol of moral courage and clarity in a time where such compasses are increasingly needed,” Metsola said.

She added that the pope’s message resonates broadly across Europe.

Metsola said the invitation had been formally communicated to the Holy See and expressed hope that the pontiff would soon address the parliament.

“On behalf of the European Parliament, I reached out to the Holy See to reaffirm our invitation for the Holy Father to address an upcoming Plenary Session of the European Parliament,” she said.

“We hope to welcome him in the near future and listen to his message for Europe,” she added.

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions following recent criticism by US President Donald Trump of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Trump had reacted to Meloni’s expressions of support for the pope, who has voiced opposition to aspects of the conflict involving Iran.

Trump recently told Corriere della Sera that he was “shocked” by Meloni’s stance and claimed she was not sufficiently supportive of US efforts regarding the conflict.

Meloni, in turn, had criticized Trump’s comments about the pope’s position on the war in Iran, calling them “unacceptable,” according to reports.
