EU Urges Israel to Reconsider West Bank Land Registration
During the European Commission’s midday press conference, spokesperson Anouar El Anouni stated that Israel’s latest approval to initiate a land registration procedure in Area C of the West Bank "constitutes a new escalation following recent measures already aimed at expanding Israeli control in Areas A and B." He stressed that this action further intensifies tensions in the region.
El Anouni pointed out that the move weakens the prospects of the two-state solution. "We recall that annexation is illegal under international law. And we call on Israel to reverse this decision," he underscored.
On Sunday, the Israeli authorities endorsed a plan to register Palestinian property in the West Bank as “state property,” representing the first instance in which this official legal mechanism has been implemented in territory administered by Israel.
A broadcaster reported that the initiative was introduced by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and Defense Minister Israel Katz.
A news agency stated that the step involves resuming previously suspended land registration processes, revoking outdated Jordanian laws, and making public land documents that had been kept confidential for decades.
Palestinians perceive these developments as a precursor to the formal annexation of the West Bank and a move toward the effective annexation of substantial areas of the territory, actions they argue would erode the two-state solution model supported by the UN.
