Trump’s trade deal with EU provokes widespread criticism throughout Europe
(MENAFN) A recent trade agreement between the European Union and the United States has drawn strong reactions, with a senior White House official claiming that Brussels effectively gave in to President Donald Trump's demands.
The agreement, which was reached on Sunday during a meeting between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, places a 15% tariff on the majority of EU exports to the United States. As part of the deal, the EU has also agreed to invest $600 billion in the American economy and to purchase $750 billion worth of U.S. energy products over a three-year period. Notably, the U.S. has not imposed any corresponding tariffs on European goods.
Sebastian Gorka, a senior director at the National Security Council, described the deal as a significant diplomatic success for Washington.
“Even for somebody like me who has known the president for a decade now, it is hard to believe that the whole European Union bent at the knee of America First and said: ‘You got us, President Trump, and we are going to surrender to a 15% tariff,’” Gorka said.
“I’ll just be very blunt with you… if you don’t understand that President Trump is engineering tectonic shifts in geopolitics that are of a global effect, that will change the world for the next 50 to 100 years, you are just an imbecile,” he added.
The deal has provoked widespread criticism throughout Europe. According to reports, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remarked, “Donald Trump ate Ursula von der Leyen for breakfast.”
French officials have also expressed strong disapproval. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou reportedly described the agreement as a form of “submission” to American interests. Meanwhile, opposition leader Marine Le Pen labeled the move “a political, economic, and moral fiasco.”
