Iran Vows Retaliation if Europe Pursues “Anti-Iran” IAEA Resolution
Araghchi made these remarks on the social media platform X, responding to a resolution proposed by the three European countries, known as the E3, at the ongoing IAEA Board of Governors meeting in Vienna.
Highlighting the 2015 nuclear agreement—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—from which the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018, Araghchi criticized the E3, stating that despite having seven years to uphold their JCPOA commitments, "they have utterly failed, either by design or ineptitude."
"Instead of displaying remorse or a desire to facilitate diplomacy, the E3 is today promoting confrontation through the absurd demand that Iran must be punished for exercising its right under the JCPOA to respond to non-performance by counterparts," he added.
Araghchi warned, "Another major strategic mistake by the E3 will compel Iran to react strongly."
If the resolution passes, it could pave the way for European powers to activate the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism—allowing them to reinstate all international sanctions if Iran is found to be non-compliant.
Since the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA under President Donald Trump and the subsequent reimposition of sanctions, Iran has progressively scaled back its nuclear commitments. Efforts to revive the deal have so far seen limited success.
